First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
The above text was written by a person called Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
Like many Germans, he was aware of the atrocities of the Nazi’s but chose rather not to speak out. Instead, he tried to self preserve, he chose to stay silent and look away – because it did not concern him, he thought. Yet, the historical events show that he, like millions of Germans, paid badly for that silence – until death and beyond.
Many may not be aware of the story of Martin Niemöller, but in my opinion, everyone should be. Why? Because of the lesson we learn from Martin Niemöller’s mistake. He chose not to speak up, not to stand up for humanity, not to stand up for the truth at a time when it was most paramount.
He mistook his sense of self preservation as self love. While he falsely believed his silence was going to protect him, it actually ended up hunting him.
We rather not look back at such stories, some may even say it’s out of date and does not concern them. However, if you allow yourself to ponder upon that statement, ask yourself if what is happening around you truly does not concern you? Are you sure it doesn’t and never will? How many times have we looked away because it wasn’t us? How many times have we kept quiet because we were too scared to say the truth? How many times did we say nothing because all we were concerned with was our self preservation? Even though we knew the truth?
This is not outdated. This is timeless. This is truth. And truth never expires.
Look, it is not about what we do, but about where our heart is. What do we treasure most? Are we lovers of the truth? Are we lovers of light? When it comes down to it, will you keep silent? For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Even if you stand alone on the side of the truth – keep in mind: With truth by your side, you are in the majority. With truth by your side, you have already won. Let’s make that choice. Let’s be winners.
With love and gratitude,
